Extreme Iceland: Day 5

The day to leave the apartment arrived so quickly, it was like leaving home. But that did not mean we were leaving the country, yet. Before leaving, we checked the ferry time schedule for Vestmanneayjar (Westman Islands) however there was no warning whether the ferry was working or not. The weather was quite windy and rainy yes, but we decided to head that direction. After 2 hours of driving we arrived to the port, there was no one around, and finally we found a note on the ticket office's door saying, journeys from that port were canceled and were directed to another port. Unfortunately, the time schedule from that port did not fit with our flight, well actually there was no return ferry in the evening. Here another reason to go back to Iceland!

We might not be able to take the ferry to Westman Islands but we saw them from the main land, and enjoyed the black sand beaches a lot! Here are some pictures:

Westman Islands
Birds fishing!

After we had a nice walk around, it was time to do some beach rally! Against who? The wind of course! First we checked the sand (solid enough to drive on), put the 4x4 wheel drive, and (for own safety) leave me behind with my camera!

So we saw Westman Islands from distance and maybe it was for good that we couldn't cross the water cos we might not be able to come back for our flight. It would not be fun to miss the plane and pay for the next one. Anyway, before we left the beach I collected some sand and stones to bring with me to Sweden. Well making my own souvenirs.

Next stop..., well actually we did not planed the next place and we had a lot of time left. So we decided to go for a tour on the west coast. The day we arrived a local person showed us a shore where herrings 'hide' during the winter and Orca's knew that so each year they enjoy the fish fest! We did not have the exact location but we new the approximately location on the map. We said why not check it out. Here we are heading to west coast and some picture from the road :
Stubborn horse does not want to move from the road :)
Some more volcanic activity
That's how Icelandic people deal with their horses :)

The road leaded us to a nice fishing village, amazing view, and luckily had pretty nice weather. However that was not where the Orca's and Herrings were (not the location we were looking for).

Leaving this nice village behind, and following the rest of the west coast. Finally we found the location where herrings suppose to hide in the winter. But I guess it was not winter for them anymore. The waters were quite and no sing of Orcas.

This was quite end of the photo session since it started to get dark and we needed to go back to Reykjavik before a restaurant closes! Well, the guys wanted to eat lamb head! Yeah you read it right, we were in a rush to eat lamb head. No worries I am not going to post that picture, it looks weird and also it was weird to eat an animal head. But instead I can post a picture showing how in rush we were:
Well it was midnight and pubs in Reykjavik were working for one more hour, after that we tried to sleep in the car which was super uncomfortable for couple of hours. I remember entering the plane and landing in Arlanda Airport.

I believe we managed to see a lot in 5 days, it just passed so quick. Thanks a lot to my friends who made this trip possible and so amazing.

The next trip is in Sweden! Renting a cottage near by a lake. One day of a village life, fire, sauna, bbq, and more! All coming soon!
